IF you are running an antivirus scan or burning DVD/CD it takes lot of time and if you urgently need to go out then you’ll go out leaving your system as it is. Even if the running tasks gets completed the system will not shut down, this will increase the usage of power unnecessarily. So here is a trick to automatically shut down Windows XP PC by scheduling a task. Although there are many other software programs for automatically shut down your PC but here we are using task scheduler which is in-built in windows XP.
Step1: Go to Start->All Programs->System Tools->Schedule Tasks.
Step2: Schedule Tasks window will open and in the menu bar go to File->New->Schedule Task and give a name to your schedule task, say for example “automatic shutdown”.
Step3: Double click on the newly created task then a window with three tabs will appear.
Step4: In the Task tab, provide the following details in the respective fields.
Run:
C:\WINDOWS\system32\shutdown.exe -s -t 60
*you may change the value 60 to whatever number you want, it indicates the shutdown waiting time limit in seconds.
Start:
C:\WINDOWS\system32
Step5: Now in Schedule tab, set an option under Schedule task say daily, set the start time say 9:00AM and click OK.
That’s it everything is set and when it is 9:00 AM then a small window appear informing that in 60 seconds your computer will shutdown.
