what is a motherboard ?
Motherboard is a printed circuit board, on which all the components like CPU, hard drive, LAN card, sound card, graphic card, memory chips, keyboard and mouse are connected. These components are connected by the means of sockets, ports, slots and connectors. Motherboards are classified into two types, integrated motherboards and non-integrated motherboards.
What are the types of motherboard?
Integrated motherboard:
Integrated motherboard has all the peripherals like sockets, serial and parallel ports, CPU, video card, sound card, graphic card and connectors for connecting hard drives are mounted on the board. So here all the components are integrated on the board itself and there is no scope for adding additional components. These boards are cheaper but the main disadvantage is that if any component fails to works then the entire board needs to be replaced.
Non-integrated motherboard:
Non-integrated motherboard contains various expansion slots where different components can be installed. Suppose you have 1 GB RAM on your board and if you like to upgrade it to 2GB then you can just remove the old 1 GB RAM chip and insert 2GB RAM into the slot. The main advantage with these boards is that if any component fails to work then only that component needs to be replaced but not the entire board. Non-integrated motherboards are costly and not space efficient.
