- Perform scandisk on all of your hard disk drives. In order to perform Scandisk: Go to My Computer, right click on any of the disk drive and click on ‘properties’. Now a window opens, select ‘tools’ tab in that window and click on ‘check now’. After clicking on check now a small window opens, check the two check boxes present there and click on ‘start’.
- Reducing the number of programs in your startup can also help your system speed and performance. Start up programs are those which load with the startup of your system and run in the background. The number of startup programs can be reduced or minimized by disabling or unselecting al the un-useful programs those are not necessary for your system startup. To do this, go to ‘run’ and type ‘msconfig’ and click on ‘ok’. A window with name ‘System Configuration Utility’ will be opened where all the startup programs of your computer will be displayed. To detect and remove such type of harmful programs like viruses, worms, Trojans etc make use of some standard antivirus tools and scan your hard disks regularly to avoid such harmful viruses.
- Perform Disk Cleanup using Disk Cleanup utility regularly for removing unwanted files and programs present in your hard disk drive. For performing disk cleanup in Windows XP: Go to ‘Control Panel’, select ‘performance and maintenance’, click on ‘Free up space on your hard disk’. Then a window opens asking you to select the drive on which you want to perform cleanup utility. Then the cleanup starts and hence the drive you selected is free from unwanted files or data. - Some visual settings can also harm the speed and performance of your system as those visual effects can take a lot of memory and make memory insufficient for performing useful tasks. In order to avoid these kind of affects: Go to ‘My Computer’, right click and click on ‘properties’, Click on ‘Advanced’ tab, select ‘settings’ under ‘performance’ where a window opens with name ‘Performance options’ and select ‘adjust for best appearance’. This will help you to set your visual effects settings in such a way that visual effects will not affect your system performance.
