IP (Internet Protocol) address is the name given to a particular device which uses Internet Protocol connected in a network to communicate with other devices over that network. It is just like a name given uniquely to an individual person in order to identify or address him/her and to call. In the similar way, IP address is used to identify a device present in the network to communicate with other devices using Internet Protocol. IP addresses are classified into IPV4 (Internet Protocol Version 4) and IPV6 (Internet Protocol Version 6) where IPV4 is a 32 bit number address and IPV6 is a 64 bit number address.

The IPV4 address is in the form of 201.15.16.241 where the decimal numbers should be only between (0-255) and each part of the address represents a group of 8 bits i.e., an octet separated using a dot (.). With the usage of internet increasing day by day, the deficiency of IPV4 addresses has occurred which as a result gave rise to the implementation of IPV6 addresses (128 bit address). The Internet Protocol Version 6 address is in the form of 2005:0df8:0000:5678:0000:0345:0070:0200. IPV6 address format is divided into 8 octets with dot (.) notation as the separator.
